The Differences Between Dermal Fillers & Anti-Wrinkle Injections

The terms ‘Anti-Wrinkle Injections’ and ‘Dermal Fillers’ may sound familiar to you, but you may still not know what each actually is, what they do and don't treat, and how they each work differently.

What Do Dermal Fillers & Anti-Wrinkle Injections Have In Common?

• Both are medical treatments referred to as Cosmetic Injections
• Both are administered via a syringe
• Both are used to treat and prevent the visible effects of aging
• Both are an S4 medication that can only be administered by a registered medical professional, such as a Nurse or Doctor
What Are The Differences Between The Two Treatments?

The easiest way to explain the difference between the two treatments is that “Anti-Wrinkle Injections” relax muscles and “Dermal Fillers” fill lines and enhance features or restore volume.

Characteristics Of Anti-Wrinkle Injections:

• They are injected into specific facial muscles
• They are measured in units, not milliliters (mls)
• Very little product is required for cosmetic treatments
• Effects occur gradually over 6 to 14 days – results are not instant
• Effects wear off gradually over 3 to 5 months depending on the area treated, dose used and the individual person
• They are also used to treat some medical conditions like migraines, excessive sweating, or teeth grinding
• For optimum long term results treatment should be repeated 3 to 5 months

Characteristics Of Dermal Filler Injections:

• They are injected into specific depths within the dermal layer of your skin, not into muscles
• They are measured in milliliters (mls)
• Depending on the specific dermal filler used and the location of treatment, can be administered in varied ml quantities
• It works by filling, enhancing, restoring volume loss to facial contours or improving skin texture and hydration
• It works immediately – the effect is immediately seen once injected (however, there is generally some localised swelling which will usually resolve over 48 to 72 hours)
• The injected substance is a simple sugar molecule derived from a plant source, similar to a substance the body already produces itself, therefore is very similar to what we naturally have within our skin
• Effects generally last 6 to 12 months depending on the area treated, amount and type of dermal filler used and the individual person
• For best long term results treatments should generally be repeated every 6-12 months depending on individual requirements and desired results
